Prague to Play Host to European Transplant Congress (PR Newswire)
PRAGUE, October 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The latest developments in the field of European and global transplantation medicine, from specialist to ethical matters, will be the subject of the four-day 13th Congress of the European Society for Organ Transplantation, ESOT 2007, which will be held in Prague for the first time from 30 September to 3 October. At the forefront of the lay and professional public´s interest will be the progress that transplantation medicine has made in recent years. Speakers include leading figures from European and world transplantation clinics such as Jean-Michel Dubernard, Bernard Charpentier, Maurice Slapak, Catherine Wood and Stefan Vítko, chairman of the Czech Transplantation Society and president of the congress. This prestigious professional gathering, which is held every two years, will be attended by more than 3,500 specialists. The next ESOT congress will be held in two years time in Paris. "The European transplantation congress is the sole place for comparing Czech transplantation medicine and international trends," said MUDr. Stefan Vítko, president of the Local Organising Committee of ESOT and head of Transplantcentrum IKEM. "The fact that the ESOT Congress is being held in Prague is a good sign for Czech transplantation medicine," he added. At the current time a Transplantcentrum IKEM team is preparing for the first small intestine transplant in the Czech Republic. The European transplantation congress, held every other year in different cities around Europe, creates a platform for the international exchange of scientific and practical knowledge and co-operation between countries in the field of organ transplants. More detailed information about the ESOT Prague 2007 Congress can be obtained at http://www.esot2007.cz. Justice Department Files Discrimination Suit Against Virginia Beach Nightclub Owner (PR Newswire)
WASHINGTON, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Department of Justice yesterday filed a lawsuit against Barry Davis and Anchor Inn LLC, d/b/a Kokoamos Island Bar & Grill (Kokoamos), alleging that the owners and managers of Kokoamos, a Virginia Beach-area restaurant and nightclub, discriminated against African-American patrons because of race in violation of Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. The Justice Department´s complaint alleges that the owners and managers of Kokoamos denied entry to African-American patrons for pretextual reasons and enforced a dress code at Kokoamos that was designed to deny entry to African Americans. "Denying African-American patrons entry to a restaurant or nightclub because of the color of their skin is a deplorable violation of this nation´s civil rights laws," said Rena J. Comisac, Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. Title II mandates that "All persons shall be entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, and accommodations of any place of public accommodation... without discrimination or segregation on the basis of race, color, religion, or national origin." Under Title II, the Civil Rights Division can obtain injunctive relief to remedy customer discrimination by changing policies and practices. Title II does not authorize the Division to obtain specific relief, such as monetary damages for individual customers who are victims of discrimination. The continued enforcement of Title II has been a priority of the Justice Department´s Civil Rights Division. Additional information about the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department is available on its Web site at http://www.usdoj.gov/crt. Persons with information or complaints regarding discriminatory practices at Kokoamos or other area clubs may call the Department of Justice at 1-800-896-7743, ext. 997. Baghdad Ablaze: How to Extinguish the Fires in Iraq and Allow for a Triumphant Return Home of U.S. Military Forces (PR Newswire)

WASHINGTON, July 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Iran Policy Committee (IPC) is briefing Members of the Congress and their staff on Wednesday 25 July 2007, at 12:30 pm in the Cannon House Caucus Room, on a book by the IPC -- Baghdad Ablaze: How to Extinguish the Fires in Iraq. Heat, fuel, and oxygen are necessary to cause fire. So, what makes Baghdad burn? First, occupation provided the initial spark and ongoing heat for insurgencies. Second, the heat ignited the fuel of ethnic and religious differences. Third, Tehran´s subversive assistance to militias across the political spectrum, including al Qaeda, is like oxygen fanning the flames. Extinguishing the fires ablaze in Baghdad to allow for a triumphant return home of U.S. forces requires: 1) preventing Iranian infiltration and destabilization of Iraq; 2) engagement of moderate Iraqis who favor an independent, secular, and democratic Iraq with clear distance from Tehran via the offices of the Iranian opposition in Iraq -- the Mujahedeen-e Khalq; and 3) an international realignment that isolates Tehran and empowers the Iranian people for democratic change through their principal opposition group -- the National Council of Resistance of Iran -- the Iranian Parliament in exile, based in Paris. WHO: -- Members of the House and the Senate -- Bruce McColm, President, Institute for Democratic Strategies and former Executive Director, Freedom House -- Professor Raymond Tanter, Georgetown University; President, Iran Policy Committee; former member, National Security Council (NSC) Staff -- Hon. William A.
